GB Models Detail-Up Sets for Tamiya 14063 Ducati 888

Today, I’m making a review of GB Models detail-up sets for Tamiya Ducati 888.

It’s been a long time I was waiting for this moment. A long time I was speechless in front of GB Models timeline on social networks.

GB Models is a new comer in the 1/12 scale motorcycle models industry, specialised in detail-up sets. They’re, for now, focused on detailing old Tamiya kits. Their first release was the GB12-M01 for Tamiya 14075, Yamaha YZR 500 OW70.

As I explained, I was already amazed by what GB Models were teasing me, and once I had the detail-up sets in hand, I was even more surprised by the importance given to details and accuracy.

The Tamiya #14063 kit is the 1992 Aldo Ferracci’s team Police Ducati 888 racing Doug Polen and Giancarlo Falappa.

The ‘A’ set, I consider as the starting pack, contains lot of photo etched parts to get tons of accurate crusty details to your Ducati 888.

I know, you saw something new, something totally innovative, but we’ll talk about it in few minutes. First photo etched sheet in hand I shot is the ‘D’ including some parts of the brake discs and the sprockets (possible to choose 2 types of rear). Remind that, this bike is all carbon brake equipped. For the youngest of you, there was a time where the WSBK racers were using carbon brake discs. As you can see, the quality is just perfect!

On the second sheets (A), some other parts for the brake discs like the frets (on the middle). Left side, the three types of exhaust clamps used by the Ducati teams and on the bottom left, some timing belts details. Be sure that after the GB Model treatment, your Ducati 888 won’t look like other builds which missed it. On the right side, chain tensioners, Brembo calipers logos or even clutch details are here like some cooling hoses connections improvements or nice cooling hoses clamps.

About Brembo calipers, note that the ones with arrows were mounted on the bikes from the moment the factory Ducati 888 riders used carbon brakes for left and right discs. At the time, riders were using a mix of steel disc on one side coupled with a carbon disc on the other.

Before ending with photo etched, let’s see these small metal and resin parts below.

Metal parts are the center of the front brake discs while the nuts are for the rear wheel axle. The resin cover was used on the factory 888 and located between the tank and the steering:

Talking about the carbon brake discs, GB Models, did right with some photo etched elements you build (for some) by piling two same parts. I call this the sandwich technique. It’s not the first time it’s used for photo etched but the combination of different thickness gives absolutely gorgeous sections on your Ducati! Watch this!

I tell you, from the first sight I couldn’t take my eyes of these perfectly sharped edges rotors! But there is more. GB Models is the first to have think and include brake disc decals! And this change it all!

Below a comparison picture between the real Ducati 888 and the GB Models improved Tamiya kit. Admit that from the first look, it’s hard to guess who’s who.

Back with another photo etched sheet (C). You will build a detailed chain from it and adding some metal chain axles. Radiators grills or the digital dashboard casing complete this last section. note that you can build the classic or digital dashboard. From what I saw when I gathered informations about the ’92 Ducati 888 used by Doug Polen and Giancarlo Falappa, I noticed that both riders used mostly the classic gauges dashboard.

You are already convinced like me about the fact that this set is a one to have but want even more details? Ok, so you have to combine your ‘A’ set with its brother, the ‘B’.

This set brings big improvements on the whole front fork of the Borgo Panigale racer. You have cnc machined fork tubes and sliders.

Upper triple clamp with hyper realistic Brembo brake fluid reservoirs that will be sublimed by photo etched (or you can choose the metal moulded) caps.

The kit fork bottoms are kept and must be cut apart from the rest of the leg like shown below:

Regarding the fork (Öhlins), GB Models includes precise striped upper legs reproducing with lot of accuracy the striped used to adjust both legs with the same height

The Öhlins caps are available in 2 options: spanner adjuster or the most know blue nuts and drilled caps. I have seen pictures of Doug Polen using the spanner fork but mostly with steel/carbon front brakes combination or early season with steel/steel set up. Once he decided to switch to carbon/carbon, he was using the blue nuts version. Giancarlo Falappa doesn’t seem to have use the spanner fork. It also seems that Doug Polen raced using sometimes carbon/carbon brakes ans spanner fork like shown here and here.

To respect the reality (and spec available from the Tamiya kit and GB Models sets), I will use this configuration like shown below:

As you can note, these GB Models detail-up sets for Tamiya Ducati 888 are extremely complete et accurate. I know that they work on more amazing sets and other great projects, but I can’t tell you more about them now.

These sets are very well designed and you will be amazed by the quantity of details you can upgrade your 888 with. The Tamiya Ducati 888 is a good kit but with GB Models you can really improve a lot of sections on the bike and turn into a real Bolognese piece of art in scale.

I truly recommend these sets, they both worth and are complementary. Below some other pictures to help you wait for the delivery of your sets.

Little bonus for you guys, if you look for details pictures of Doug Polen’s 888 with spanner+steel/carbon front brakes check this LINK. For Giancarlo Falappa’s in carbon/carbon brakes configuration check my friend Phil Aynsley website, this LINK or THIS ONE.
